Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Vorlesungen über die Philosophie der Kunst I, Gesammelte Werke, 28,1

Hegel’s Philosophy of Art, in its extensively developed form, has been preserved solely through lecture transcripts from the lectures Hegel gave in Berlin, which he held a total of four times. These transcripts provide a reliable picture of the development of this discipline.

Part I contains the text witnesses of the first two lectures: The winter semester of 1820/21 is exclusively documented by the transcript of Wilhelm von Ascheberg. In contrast, for the summer semester of 1823, two transcripts have been preserved, of which the one by Heinrich Gustav Hotho has been chosen as the main text; important additions are provided by variants from the transcript of Carl Kromayr. Hotho’s manuscript was already published a few years ago, but it is only now presented in a historically critical edition with this part. The parallel text by Kromayr had not been explored previously.

žThe following parts will include the transcripts from the 1826 and 1828/29 lectures, as well as the editorial report and annotations.
